InterOil Corporation – Rig Jack for Rig 2 Papua New Guinea

Practical Engineering has completed many projects for InterOil Corporation this past year for their operations in Papua New Guinea. In this instance, Practical engineers and designers spent time in PNG gathering information, providing guidance and supervising the installation of designs. Back home, in our Brisbane office, Practical staff designed and drafted a new BOP handling system, new sheaves and shafts for the crown. The design and installation of a new rig jack up system including stairs and jackstands . A new sub-base was also in our scope of works.

HMP Constructions - 250 tonne Float Update Moranbah, North Queensland

This project required an update of the aging hauler on the HMP Constructions 250 tonne hauler/float combination. This involved modifying the gooseneck of the float to suit the CAT777 standard hitch.A site trip to Goonyella for inspection and measuring of the existing gooseneck and hauler arrangement was completed and a basic analysis of the existing strengths and critical geometries was undertaken. In order to maintain and improve the performance of the existing truck, Practical Engineering had to lengthen and raise the gooseneck.< HMP Constructions also decided to update their accessway and modify the gooseneck to withstand an anti-jackknife stop (to suit the CAT777 standard anti-jackknife structure). Practical Engineering supplied a series of demolition and installation drawings, in combination with manufacturing drawings for the successful completion of this project.

SmartStone Paving - Paver-Grab Head Re-Design. Brisbane

Practical Engineering was asked by SmartStone Paving to re-design the head for their paver-grab.The existing head was dropping pavers and was described by operators as being difficult to use. Practical Engineering devised an alternative machine which encompassed greater gripping power and overall a greater functionality of the head.

This improvement in functionality was re-designed under tight weight limits.Practical Engineering commissioned a prototype, which was successful and there is now an order for two more re-designed paver-grab heads.

Komatsu – Stacking Cages Australia-wide

Komatsu’s operations in Sydney requires the combination of warehouse and workshop. Due to the space premium Komatsu Sydney decided to re-design their existing warehousing system to allow for the stacking of engines and transmissions. Practical Engineering completed a design check and certification on a new cage design and manufactured the stacking cagesIn this turnkey operation, Practical Engineering supplied the design, manufacture and delivery of the product.

InterOil Corporation Project

Practical Engineering was recommended to InterOil Corporation for the re-design of a heli-portable drill floor. The drill floor required a larger rotary table, increased deck space and the entire rig was raised two metres. Practical Engineering worked closely with InterOil Corporation to adhere to strict weight restrictions enabling the rig to be airlifted by helicopter into its position in the Papua New Guinean highlands.

Practical Engineers designed:

  • Pony bases for the rig carrier
  • A structurally efficient drill floor
  • BOP Handling system
  • Modular access system – a heli-transportable stair towers
  • A structural frame to extend the height of the dog box
  • Ancillary equipment affected by the change in rig height

In this time critical project, Practical Engineering delivered on-time and on-budget.
